While birth control options for women are far from perfect, they are indeed plentiful. IUDs, sponges, pills, implants, diaphragms – they are all available and they are looking at YOU, cis-gender-pregnancy-protection-seeking females!
Several of them are very, very good at doing just what they’re supposed to – preventing an egg of yours and a sperm of someone else’s from hooking up in the womb-room. Other times, these methods are effectively prescribed for irregular and painful periods, acne and excessive bleeding.
But that’s not the whole story. Some providers in this day and age are only too happy to write you an Rx without explaining some serious potential side effects such as mood changes and sexual pain/discomfort that may occur with current use or in the future. While many women thankfully don’t experience these things, those who do often feel like they’ve been had.
We are all about self-advocacy here at Maze. So next time you go to a medical appointment – whether it’s for your reproductive health or anything else – take a notepad, do your research and ensure your concerns and questions are being taken seriously! Providers don’t have all the answers, but if they take the time you deserve at your visits, you should experience a collaborative relationship that provides a solid foundation for decision-making.
