I recently watched the mini-series “When We Rise”. The show follows the true life individual and political histories of various LGBT activists who were instrumental in the US civil rights movement.

Going back further in our country’s history, I learned that all Native American societies acknowledged three to five gender roles : Female, male, Two Spirit Female, Two Spirit Male, and transgendered. An article entitled “Two Spirits, One Heart, Five Genders” beautifully depicts the traditional Native American LGBT experience.
