Treatment Options for Vaginismus

Dilation Under Anesthesia

Vaginal injections are used to treat vaginismus in severe cases where the more conservative treatments, such as dilators alone, have not been successful. The first steps are not even attempted because the pain and the fear are so great or there are no trained practitioners locally.

Dilation Under Anesthesia offers a solution that allows patients who are struggling to overcome the pain and fear caused by vaginismus, to significantly shorten the treatment period.

Important information

  • Maze is one of a very small group of medical practices that performs this procedure
  • Peter Pacik, who developed this procedure and retired in 2015, trained our staff to continue his work
  • Maze has successfully treated 100’s of women
  • We treat patients from all over the world
  • The treatment only requires 2 days in New York, with follow-up appointments via phone or video

Treatment Options for Other sexual issues

In addition to Vaginismus, Maze can also treat patients suffering from low sex drive, orgasm issues, hormone imbalances, PSAS, and other matters related to female sexual dysfunction.

Many women located outside of the New York area are willing to travel to Maze because they have already been to their local gynecologist but were not helped. In some cases, a doctor dismissed the symptoms as unimportant (“Just relax, have a glass of wine”), or could not find anything “wrong,” (“Everything’s fine. It’s just what women your age go through.”). While in other cases, the doctor simply did not have the skills or experience necessary to successfully treat the issue (“I don’t see anything.”).

In fact, many of our patients are referred to us by their own OB/GYN.

While we cannot diagnose or treat medical conditions over the phone, we do have options for people who contact us from out of our local area. The first step is to schedule a free 10-minute phone consultation with one of our clinicians to help you evaluate if a specific program will be right for you.

Modified Treatment for Short-Term Stays in NY Area

With local area patients, our first appointment is a 1½-hour meeting for diagnosis. During this appointment, the patient meets with a therapist to give a psycho-sexual history and a nurse practitioner for a physical exam, blood draw and additional tests as necessary. The patient returns a week later for a follow-up appointment to discuss all bloodwork, tests, notes, etc.

For our out-of-town patients, we schedule the first two appointments within a few days of each other so that all the important results will be available for the second meeting within a shorter time frame.

If the patient is found to need a hormone regimen, we generally want the blood work run in our on-site lab every 10 weeks or so. For patients from outside our area, we will make arrangements to work with a lab that is local to the patient for some of the blood draws, although at least two to three follow-up appointments and blood draws during the first year must be in person. Later, treatment can taper down to more infrequent visits.

To summarize, you will need to be in New York initially for three days and return a minimum of three other times during the year for evaluation and follow-up treatment.
