A Housewarming Party

In today’s world of hustle and bustle, we are more than just busy; we are often disconnected from ourselves and what is going on in our bodies.  While it may not seem like a big deal, this disconnect pervades many areas of life.

Many of our patients talk about wanting to experience more sexual pleasure and feel more vibrant.  Here’s the thing. If you don’t live—and I don’t just mean inhabit, but really live—in your body, how are supposed to experience pleasure? That’s like saying you want to host a housewarming party in house you don’t live in; it would be a lot more work, you wouldn’t know where things are as well, you wouldn’t be able to be as relaxed, and you may even resent your guests more.

When I talk about living in your body, it’s more than just how you feel when you look in the mirror. It’s about being present in your body; feeling courageous to notice without judging and accept without shame. It’s about being willing to take a break from living as a human doing and be a human being.  There are many distractions that hold back this process; after all, smart phones have become a security blanket that is grabbed for soothing, closeness, and familiarity.  But when we step out of that comfort zone and take a risk in being still and being willing to sit lovingly with our present experience, we may find that perhaps we have more inner resources than we realized.
