Should I be Using an Estrogen Cream?

Estrogen creams are for peri or post-menopausal women experiencing symptoms of vaginal atrophy. It occurs because of the lower estrogen levels in the blood after menopause. The skin becomes drier and less elastic, causing such symptoms as burning, pain with intercourse, and even urinary incontinence. Estrogen creams work locally, as opposed to hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which works systemically. This means that the cream is applied to the skin, works directly where it is applied, and shouldn’t increase your blood estrogen levels.

HRT affects the entire body and is the most effective treatment for hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, low sex drive, vaginal dryness, etc. So, if you are experiencing any of those symptoms, then yes, you may find an estrogen cream to be very helpful. Women who have had breast or uterine cancers however, should discuss their specific case with their oncologists first.
