Are you Clitorate?

If so, then you’re familiar with the following facts:

  1. The clitoris has over 8,000 nerve endings (comparatively, the penis has 4,000).
  2. The clitoris was only identified as an anatomical body part in 1998.
  3. The clitoris is the only part of the body that is designed solely for pleasure.

When you consider this superhero of the genitals, you might wonder why it isn’t more revered. Here at Maze, we think this acknowledgement is well-overdue, and so does conceptual artist and photographer Sophia Wallace, who took the TED Talks stage by storm in 2017 in her presentation entitled ‘Cliteracy.’ TED says “this critically acclaimed project addressing citizenship and body sovereignty (used) the medium of text-based objects, unauthorized street installation and interactive sculptural forms.” These pieces have generated conversation and exploration of the clitoris and all that it represents for women and those who love them.

Recently, I received an email from renowned women’s advocate and childbirth expert Debra Pascali-Bonaro. She shared a story about how she posed outside on the streets of NYC with a group of women for a photograph, and she encouraged everyone to forego the usual “cheese” and yell “clitoris!” instead as the picture was taken. Did that ever garner some attention from the local passersby!

Since only 30% of women are able to have an orgasm from intercourse alone, the clitoris is really a woman’s best friend.
