There was a time when girls and women had little access to sexual health information. Long before the internet was even a gleam in anyone’s eye, people had only relatives and friends on which to rely (if they were lucky enough to have those types of relatives and friends). But other resources were hard to come by. If you were an adolescent in the 70’s for example, you probably remember sneaking a peek at your parents’ copy of “The Joy of Sex.” Or maybe it was an issue of Playboy magazine you came across when you snooped around their night table drawers. But what did we know of context or science? Those items did little to satisfy our healthy curiosity, and they couldn’t help us understand who we were outside of a (generally) white, binary and heteronormative lens.
Now, of course, we’ve been blessed with the internet, and we suffer from the opposite problem. There is no shortage of websites vying for our sexual attention. We all know about the porn – oh, the porn. Spit into the www wind and you’ve literally got anything you could possibly desire. (Naturally, quality and content vary and that’s another blog for another day). There are evidence-based sites (like the one you are currently visiting), and there are the real-talk type sites (we recommend www.thesexed.com for starters) and – unfortunately – a lot of others that promote just pure, unadulterated misinformation (because after all, any 9 yr-old without parental supervision and access to a computer can design a website).
