Hi ladies. In an excellent, excellent post, one of our Forum members, Kim, who will be treated on 11/11 wrote:
Thank you ladies for giving of your own time to encourage me – I so need it! Today is a good day – I feel calm and brave 😉

And on the way to work I turned up the radio crazy loud and sang “Roar” by Katy Perry (my own personal war cry against Vaginismus!):
“I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath
Scared to rock the boat and make a mess
So I sat quietly, agreed politely
    I guess that I forgot I had a choice
I let you push me past the breaking point
I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything
You held me down, but I got up (HEY!)
    Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, you hear that sound
Like thunder gonna shake the ground
You held me down, but I got up (HEY!)
Get ready cause I’ve had enough
I see it all, I see it now
    [Chorus]
I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire
Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
    Louder, louder than a lion
Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
    You’re gonna hear me roar
Now I’m floating like a butterfly
Stinging like a bee I earned my stripes
I went from zero, to my own hero
You held me down, but I got up (HEY!)
    Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, you hear that sound
Like thunder gonna shake the ground
You held me down, but I got up (HEY!)
Get ready ’cause I’ve had enough
I see it all, I see it now
    [Chorus]
I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire
‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
    Louder, louder than a lion
‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
    You’re gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
    You’ll hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
    You’re gonna hear me roar…”
    http://youtu.be/CevxZvSJLk8#sthash.QMaxbvZg.dpuf (link to song)

    Thereafter, Dr. Pacik wrote:

“I’m touched! What a great war song! I would like to remind new readers of Rachel’s song that is dedicated to women struggling with vaginismus. It touches me every time I listen to it.
You can link to YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9fZ0855nzc (Alone Anymore by Kazia Gray)

    Then, I wrote:
I think this particular song speaks to facing the “scary unknown” and speaking up instead of holding everything in. I never spoke to anyone about my vaginismus and I was terrified at the time to face it head on. Despite this real fear, I finally decided to speak up, had the procedure, and I am now living vaginismus-free. It certainly took bravery but it was so worth it!!!!

    Sara Bareilles
    “Brave”

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUQsqBqxoR4 (link to song)
    Everybody’s been there,
Everybody’s been stared down by the enemy
    Fallen for the fear
    And done some disappearing,
    Bow down to the mighty
Don’t run, stop holding your tongue
Maybe there’s a way out of the cage where you live
Maybe one of these days you can let the light in
Show me how big your brave is
    Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave
With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave
    I just wanna see you
    I just wanna see you
    I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave
    I just wanna see you
    I just wanna see you
    I just wanna see you
    See you be brave

In addition to these 3 songs, what other songs can we add to our play list? This can be a very, very fun thread to come up with new and fun songs together. What is your own personal war cry against vaginismus?

One that I love right now is “Overcomer” by Mandisa. 🙂 I also have quite a few others, but most of them are Christian influenced songs. Don’t know if that matters to anyone else, but for me they lift me up. Music is such a blessing! There are so many talented song-writers and artists – feels like God personally talking to me through the music. Anyways, here are the lyrics …

    “Overcomer”

    Staring at a stop sign
    Watching people drive by
    T Mac on the radio
Got so much on your mind
    Nothing’s really going right
Looking for a ray of hope

Whatever it is you may be going through
I know He’s not gonna let it get the best of you

    You’re an overcomer
Stay in the fight ‘til the final round
    You’re not going under
‘Cause God is holding you right now
You might be down for a moment
    Feeling like it’s hopeless
    That’s when He reminds You
    That you’re an overcomer
    You’re an overcomer

    Everybody’s been down
Hit the bottom, hit the ground
    Oh, you’re not alone
Just take a breath, don’t forget
    Hang on to His promises
    He wants You to know

The same Man, the Great I am
    The one who overcame death
    Is living inside of You
So just hold tight, fix your eyes
On the one who holds your life
    There’s nothing He can’t do
    He’s telling You

Another one that is my personal life song is “Voice of Truth” by Casting Crowns. Again, a Christian influenced song, but just means so much to me because it talks a lot about courage and tuning out all the negative voices in your head – something I definitely struggle with.

    “Voice Of Truth”

Oh what I would do to have
The kind of faith it takes to climb out of this boat I’m in
    Onto the crashing waves

To step out of my comfort zone
To the realm of the unknown where Jesus is
And He’s holding out his hand

But the waves are calling out my name and they laugh at me
Reminding me of all the times I’ve tried before and failed
The waves they keep on telling me
Time and time again. ‘Boy, you’ll never win!’
    “You’ll never win”

But the voice of truth tells me a different story
And the voice of truth says “Do not be afraid!”
And the voice of truth says “This is for My glory”
Out of all the voices calling out to me
I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth

Oh what I would do to have
The kind of strength it takes to stand before a giant
With just a Sling and a stone
Surrounded by the sound of a thousand warriors
    Shaking in their armor
Wishing they’d have had the strength to stand

But the giant’s calling out my name and he laughs at me
Reminding me of all the times I’ve tried before and failed
The giant keeps on telling me
Time and time again “boy, you’ll never win!
    “You’ll never win”

But the stone was just the right size
To put the giant on the ground
And the waves they don’t seem so high
From on top of them looking down
I will soar with the wings of eagles
When I stop and listen to the sound of Jesus
    Singing over me

I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth

Anyways, those are two of my favorites, hope you find the lyrics as encouraging as I do. 🙂

I’m glad Heather! I thought of another one by Mandisa that I LOVE is “Stronger”..

    “Stronger”

Hey, heard you were up all night
Thinking about how your world ain’t right
And you wonder if things will ever get better
And you’re asking why is it always raining on you
When all you want is just a little good news
Instead of standing there stuck out in the weather

    Oh, don’t hang your head
    It’s gonna end
    God’s right there
Even if it’s hard to see Him
I promise you that He still cares

    [Chorus:]
When the waves are taking you under
Hold on just a little bit longer
He knows that this is gonna make you stronger, stronger
The pain ain’t gonna last forever
And things can only get better
    Believe me
This is gonna make you stronger
Gonna make you stronger, stronger, stronger
Believe me, this is gonna make you Stronger

Try and do the best you can
Hold on and let Him hold your hand
And go on and fall into the arms of Jesus
Oh, lift your head it’s gonna end
    God’s right there
Even when you just can’t feel Him
I promise you that He still cares

    [Chorus]

‘Cause if He started this work in your life
He will be faithful to complete it
    If only you believe it
He knows how much it hurts
And I’m sure that He’s gonna help you get through this

When the waves are taking you under
Hold on just a little bit longer
He knows that this is gonna make you stronger, stronger
The pain ain’t gonna last forever
In time it’s gonna get better
    Believe me
This is gonna make you stronger

“Firework” by Katy Perry is another good one…

    “Firework”

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again?
Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin
Like a house of cards, one blow from caving in?

Do you ever feel already buried deep six feet under?
Scream but no one seems to hear a thing
Do you know that there’s still a chance for you
‘Cause there’s a spark in you?

You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine
Just own the night like the 4th of July

    ‘Cause, baby, you’re a firework
Come on, show ’em what you’re worth
Make ’em go “Oh, oh, oh”
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

    Baby, you’re a firework
Come on, let your colours burst
Make ’em go “Oh, oh, oh”
You’re gonna leave ’em all in awe, awe, awe

You don’t have to feel like a wasted space
    You’re original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow

Maybe you reason why all the doors are closed
So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road
Like a lightning bolt, your heart will glow
And when it’s time you’ll know

You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine
Just own the night like the 4th of July

    ‘Cause, baby, you’re a firework
Come on, show ’em what you’re worth
Make ’em go “Oh, oh, oh”
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

    Baby, you’re a firework
Come on, let your colours burst
Make ’em go “Oh, oh, oh”
You’re gonna leave ’em all in awe, awe, awe

    Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
It’s always been inside of you, you, you
And now it’s time to let it through-ough-ough

    ‘Cause, baby, you’re a firework
Come on, show ’em what you’re worth
Make ’em go “Oh, oh, oh”
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

    Baby, you’re a firework
Come on, let your colours burst
Make ’em go “Oh, oh, oh”
You’re gonna leave ’em all in awe, awe, awe

    Boom, boom, boom

    Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon

My favorite band is Tenth Avenue North (another Christian band) and the lyrics to their songs are incredible. Seriously talented musicians. “Hold My Heart”, “Worn” and “Times” are my favorite songs but literally all of their music is great. 🙂 All three of those songs just make me cry, but only because I can relate to them soooo much.

    “Times”

know I need you, I need to love you
I love to see you, but it’s been so long
I long to feel you, I feel this need for you
And I need to hear you, is that so wrong?

Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh

Now you pull me near you
When we’re close, I fear you
Still I’m afraid to tell you
    All that I’ve done

    Are you done forgiving?
Oh, can you look past my pretending?
Lord, I’m so tired of defending
What I’ve become, what have I become

Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh

I hear you say my love is over, it’s underneath
    It’s inside, it’s in between

The times you doubt me, when you can’t feel
The times that you question is this for real?
The times you’re broken, the times that you mend
The times that you hate me and the times that you bend

Well, my love is over, it’s underneath
    It’s inside, it’s in between

These times you’re healing and when your heart breaks
The times that you feel like you’re falling from grace
The times you’re hurting, the times that you heal
The times you go hungry and attempted to steal

In times of confusion, in chaos and pain
I’m there in your sorrow under the weight of your shame
I’m there through your heartache, I’m there in the storm
My love I will keep you by my power alone

I don’t care where you fall, where you have been
I’ll never forsake you, my love never ends
    It never ends

Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQWDz6slq_k — link for the music video for “Times”

    “Worn” (my current favorite song)

    I’m tired I’m worn
    My heart is heavy
From the work it takes to keep on breathing
    I’ve made mistakes
    I’ve let my hope fail
My soul feels crushed by the weight of this world

And I know that you can give me rest
So I cry out with all that I have left

    Let me see redemption win
Let me know the struggle ends
That you can mend a heart that’s frail and torn
I want to know a song can rise from ashes of a broken life
And all that’s dead inside can be reborn
    Cause i’m worn

I know I need to lift my eyes up
    But I’m to weak
    Life just won’t let up

And I know that you can give me rest
So I cry out with all that I have left

Oh Let me see redemption win
Let me know the struggle ends
That you can mend a heart that’s frail and torn
I want to know a song can rise from the ashes of a broken life
And all that’s dead inside can be reborn
    Cause I’m worn

    My prayers are wearing thin
    Ya I’m worn
    Even before the day begins
    Ya I’m worn
I’ve lost my will to fight
    I’m worn
So heaven come and flood my eyes

    Let me see redemption wins
Let me know the struggle ends
That you can mend a heart that’s frail and torn
I want to know a song can rise from the ashes of a broken life
And all that’s dead inside can be reborn
Yes, all that’s dead inside will be reborn
    Though I’m worn
    Ya I’m worn

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9UfRQUf64U

    “Hold My Heart”

How long must I pray, must I pray to You
How long must I wait, must I wait for You
How long ’till I see Your face
    See You shining through

    I’m on my knees
    Begging You to notice me
    I’m on my knees
Father, will You turn to me, yeah?

One tear in the dropping rain
One voice in a sea of pain
Could the Maker of the stars
Hear the sound of my breaking heart?

One life is all I am
Right now I can barely stand
If You’re everything You say You are
Would You come close and hold my heart?

I’ve been so afraid, afraid to close my eyes
So much can slip away before I say goodbye
But if there’s no other way
    I’m done asking why

    ‘Cause I’m on my knees
Begging You to turn to me
    I’m on my knees
Father, will You run to me, yeah?

One tear in the dropping rain
One voice in a sea of pain
Could the Maker of the stars
Hear the sound of my breaking heart?

One life is all I am
Right now I can barely stand
If You’re everything You say You are
Would You come close and hold my heart?

    So many questions without answers
    Your promises remain
I can’t see but I’ll take my chances
To hear You call my name
To hear You call my name

One tear in the dropping rain
One voice in a sea of pain
Could the Maker of the stars
Hear the sound of my breaking heart?

One life is all I am
Right now I can barely stand
If You’re everything You say You are
Would You come close and hold my heart?

    Hold my heart
    Could You hold my heart?
    Hold my heart

    Christina Aguilara – Beautiful

“Beautiful” is a stunning anthem that is uplifting and empowering.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgJnmO3ZCkc

    “Beautiful”

    Don’t look at me.

    Every day is so wonderful
Then suddenly it’s hard to breathe.
Now and then I get insecure
From all the pain, I’m so ashamed.

I am beautiful no matter what they say.
    Words can’t bring me down.
I am beautiful in every single way.
Yes, words can’t bring me down… Oh no.
So don’t you bring me down today.

To all your friends you’re delirious,
So consumed in all your doom.
Trying hard to fill the emptiness.
The pieces gone, left the puzzle undone.
is that the way it is?

You are beautiful no matter what they say
Words can’t bring you down….oh no
You are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can’t bring you down, oh, no
So don’t you bring me down today…

    No matter what we do
    (no matter what we do)
    No matter what we say
    (no matter what we say)
We’re the song inside the tune
    Full of beautiful mistakes

    And everywhere we go
    (and everywhere we go)
    The sun will always shine
(the sun will always, always shine)
And tomorrow we might wake on the other side

We are beautiful no matter what they say
Yes, words won’t bring us down, no, no
We are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can’t bring us down, oh, no
So don’t you bring me down today

Oh, yeah, don’t you bring me down today, yeah, ooh
Don’t you bring me down ooh… today

Jason Mraz – “I won’t give up” is an absolutely amazing song Kelsi.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1-4u9W-bns

My favorite lyrics of it include:

“Well, I won’t give up on us (no I’m not giving up)
God knows I’m tough enough (I am tough, I am loved)
We’ve got a lot to learn (we’re alive, we are loved)
God knows we’re worth it (and we’re worth it)”

Thank you for sharing it with us.

Hi ladies. My husband and I are huge Red Sox fans and during the recent World Series, one of our players, Shane Victorino, would always come onto the field with all of the fans singing “Don’t worry about a thing, Cause every little things gonna be all right. Singin’: Don’t worry about a thing, Cause every little things gonna be all right!” We all loved it. I got to thinking about the song more and how it pertains to anxiety in general. I recall being so, so worried about “every little thing” prior to my procedure and only being calm after it was over with. I think this is a light song that may be added to the playlist to help you to know that every little thing truly is going to be all right and you will all come out on top and overcome vaginismus.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzjZkdlulqc

    “Three Little Birds”
    “Don’t worry about a thing,
‘Cause every little thing gonna be all right.
Singin’: “Don’t worry about a thing,
‘Cause every little thing gonna be all right! “

    Rise up this mornin’,
    Smile with the risin’ sun,
    Three little birds
    Each by my doorstep
    Singin’ sweet songs
    Of melodies pure and true,
Sayin’, (“This is my message to you-ou-ou: “)

Singin’: “Don’t worry ’bout a thing,
‘Cause every little thing gonna be all right.”
Singin’: “Don’t worry (don’t worry) ’bout a thing,
‘Cause every little thing gonna be all right! “

    Rise up this mornin’,
    Smiled with the risin’ sun,
    Three little birds
    Each by my doorstep
    Singin’ sweet songs
    Of melodies pure and true,
Sayin’, “This is my message to you-ou-ou: “

Singin’: “Don’t worry about a thing, worry about a thing, oh!
Every little thing gonna be all right. Don’t worry! “
    Singin’: “Don’t worry about a thing” – I won’t worry!
“‘Cause every little thing gonna be all right.”

Singin’: “Don’t worry about a thing,
‘Cause every little thing gonna be all right” – I won’t worry!
Singin’: “Don’t worry about a thing,
‘Cause every little thing gonna be all right.”
Singin’: “Don’t worry about a thing, oh no!
‘Cause every little thing gonna be all right!

Also, in a prior post, Dr. Pacik has written: There are a thousand worries that the average patient has as the day of treatment approaches. “What ifs” tend to be all consuming. There comes a point that it helps to simply allow the flow to take you along its course. I often tell (my worried surgical patients) that they should think of their surgery or treatment as a ride in the car. They put their seat belts on (these are the many safety monitors we have throughout the operating and recovery room) and I’ll take them for a safe ride. I know the route and I am a safe driver. For my vaginismus patients where the treatment has a high level of safety, but anxiety rears its ugly head, the same can be true to help stem the normal anxiety that takes place. There is not much more anyone can say. The day comes and goes, much like any other day. Now you are on one side, then you have stepped across and you are on the other side.

Can you think of any additional songs to add to the NH playlist?

It’s such a great group of songs Olivia and I love, love, loved yours mentioned. Ladies, can we all collectively think of any additional songs to add?
