Every day, the main story in the news is the spread of Coronavirus and the death toll in the US and worldwide. The virus has everyone in a panic, and stores are sold out of hand sanitizer while shelves become bare of the essentials as people prepare for the worst from this outbreak.
While no one is immune from contracting coronavirus, there are things you can do to protect yourself and boost your immune system.
First, wash your hands frequently or use a hand sanitizer that is alcohol based. Next, clean and disinfect surfaces, stay away from anyone coughing or sneezing, and avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you are not feeling well, stay home from work to avoid infecting others. If your symptoms become more severe, do not go to the hospital or urgent care. Instead, contact your health provider or local authority to determine next steps.
As far as boosting immunity, remember that our immune system starts in the gut. Nutrients shown to help boost immunity are vitamin C, vitamin D, selenium, and zinc. Eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, especially citrus fruits, tomatoes, peppers and berries. Many foods white or light yellow in color, such as ginger, chicken broth, garlic, mushrooms, manuka honey, or bone broth can also boost immune function. Other foods to include are shellfish, spinach, broccoli, fish, sweet potatoes, and green tea.
Some research has shown that various supplements such as licorice root, elderberry syrup, oregano oil, probiotics, turmeric, vitamin D, selenium, and zinc can aid in boosting immunity. Additionally, regular exercise and adequate sleep are important to stay healthy as we battle the Coronavirus.
