Intrarosa- Treatment for Post-Menopausal Pain

There is a new drug out there for the treatment of post-menopausal pain with intercourse called Intrarosa. It was recently approved by the FDA and adds yet another treatment option for women that are experiencing the painful effects of postmenopausal vaginal atrophy. It is a daily use vaginal insert.

This new treatment would be for woman that are unable (or not willing) to use estrogen creams. As opposed to topical moisturizers, which treat the symptoms, this medication works on a cellular level repairing the layers of skin and increasing vaginal lubrication.

As with any medication, it is important to discuss with you treating clinician what treatment is best for you. But it is exciting to see that they are developing more and more options for the treatment of vulvar and vaginal atrophy.

Cathleen earned her physician assistant degree from Albany Medical School. Prior to that, she earned a B.A. in social sciences from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She has been a physician assistant specializing in women’s health issues for more than 20 years. She has worked with gynecologists, infertility specialists and general practitioners. Cathleen also worked at Planned Parenthood for the past 15 years, meeting the obstetrical and gynecological needs of women.
