ParticipantHi there, I’ve got a question for the doctors here (or maybe someone else knows the answer too).
I’d like to know exactly what happens to your hymen when you have sex (or when you insert tampons or vibrators or whatever). I’ve heard some people saying that no matter how big the object is, the hymen tears and done, it’s gone. Others told me it can tear in stages, which means that whenever a larger object is inserted (or when you have a new partner with a bigger penis for instance), it can tear again. And again, and again, until you insert something that is as large as your vaginal opening itself. Others say it doesn’t tear but stretch. Some say it bleeds, others say that’s BS. I’m totally lost and I don’t get it. How does this really work?

ParticipantHi there! The hymen can tear or stretch in multiple stages—it’s not a one-time event for everyone. Some people experience partial tearing that may continue with further penetration, while others have a more elastic hymen that stretches rather than tears. The amount of bleeding (if any) varies greatly and isn’t a reliable indicator of virginity or sexual activity. Factors like hymen thickness, elasticity, and individual anatomy all play a role.
If you’re concerned about discomfort or pain, go slow, use lubrication, and focus on relaxation. If you have persistent pain or questions about your anatomy, a gynecologist can give personalized advice.

MargarettS is spot on and I agree with everything she wrote.
Everyone is individual and there are several factors that will determine how one’s hymen will tear or stretch. It’s not the same for everyone.
I think slow dilation can be very helpful, and I encourage anyone who is struggling with penetration to consider starting a home dilation program.
Home dilation programs can also be a wonderful way to prepare for first intercourse.
